Subject:Help! Seamstresses!!!
Time:08:42 am
Current Mood:hopefulhopeful
My cousin is getting married in June. She got a good deal on a strapless dress but wants a lace shrug or bolero to go over it. Mom is offering to make it but is nervous about sewing lace and matching the lace to the lace on her dress. I need resources!
1) Good quality patterns for boleros (yes, we've checked the typical makers like Vogue and Simplicity).
2) How to make a somewhat structured garment out of primarily lace (could we stiffen or reinforce it over a sheer fabric?
3) Where should we shop for fabric? Britex? Laci's?
Any tips are welcomed!

Subject:Brunch Help...

Hi LJ Land!

I'm looking for a lovely, casual brunch place for brunch for a group of ladies somewhere in the 680-580-Hwy 4 triangle. Any thoughts?

Subject:I, too, have a smart ass! Happily ganked from [info]kadyg!
Time:12:04 pm
This came up on another board that my friend [info]kadyg is on and it's entirely too good not to share. The fact that it was written by a French woman makes it that much better.

Recently, in a large city in France, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said, "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

A middle-aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

To Whom It May Concern,

Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans.) They have an active sex life, get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia . Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Just look at them ... where is IT? Therefore, they don't have kids either. Not to mention, who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me: I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy cinnamon rolls and chocolate, and a good dinner with friends. With time, we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good grief, look how smart I am!"

EDIT: This isn't to say I'm not to continue to work to be healthy/ier.

Subject:b & lu plus size fashions
Time:08:24 am
Well, someone posted about how much they like b & lu. I gave them a try and ordered this dress. It arrived last night. I was surprised at how light the package was and when I pulled out the dress and tried it on, the fabric looks more dingy than described; it's light, flimsy fabric; the seams are unimpressive; there's surprisingly little butt allowance space in the skirt; and I'm basically unimpressed. They save face by being made in the USA but... I'm glad I bought it on sale.

Did anyone get pictures of the June 13th Hare House party? I haven't seen any pop up on Flickr...

On another note, I played a game on my way to work this morning. I piece of cardboard flew onto the grill of my car and I tried to keep it there (without driving dangerously) as long as I could - 4 miles.

To [info]tangential1, It appears that the Scottish Meat Pie Company in Dixon really is closed. Makes sense as to not seeing it on recent trips down 113... Aggie

With the multitude of fires going on in California, you'd think people would wise up - we need to reduce the fuel load in our forests and grasslands and allow people to manage (not destroy, manage) our forests and grasslands. Prescribed grazing of grasslands and forest understory by cattle, sheep, and goats (on top of that done by native ruminants) can reduce fuel load, help control non-native vegetation, and prevent devastating wildfires. On top of that, Illegal cultivation of marijuana in California's forest lands has been a significant problem for several years, prompting federal and local agencies to step up eradication efforts, Turner said. and what better to keep an eye on our wildlands than have folks, cowboys and shepards, out on the land (not just on hiking trails) keeping an eye on it? Please, allow stewards of the land to be stewards of the land!

Subject:The Human Side of Agriculture: Managing Tough Times
Time:11:47 am
This was passed on to me by one of my colleagues.

The following link provides access to the powerpoint presentation regarding suicide prevention, not just to our producers but contains good facts on signs to look for and risk groups to consider. We are in a time of economic crisis for many farmers and ranchers and recent suicides among the agricultural industry has prompted this website.

http://mtt.cahs.colostate.edu/resources/default.aspx

One interesting statistic was that the highest risk group for suicide, nationally, is white males ages 70-74, which unfortunately, many of our produers are in this country. Of course, statistics don't really matter if anyone you know has committed suicide. It's devastating for any individual.

There are great references and resources provided in this power point and on this website in general, but for quick reference there are 2 national suicide prevention hotlines:

1-800-273-8255 english
1-877-298-3373 espanol

I think this is a valuable presentation to watch not just pertaining to the agricultural industry, but helps understand some of the early signs of suicide and some things you can do or places you can refer to for help. Just thought I'd pass along.
